Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Leader Departs Following Shift Into Chicken.

The chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its governing body.

Executive Change

Rennie is departing after only 24 months in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a new leader.

Rennie, who worked for Domino's for over 20 years, had aimed to redirect Britain's largest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted poultry was the quickest rising protein in the international market.

Board Disagreements

It is understood that there was friction between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and direction, although the company's official statement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.

Recent Product Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused brand – which the former chief called a “significant new phase” for the company – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in the coming year as scheduled, it regards chicken products as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

Bull, the Domino's chairman, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and performance improvement in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”

Industry Difficulties

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the takeaway market had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in half-year profits.

Rival chains are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of multiple locations a recently, after the firm behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Adapting to customer preferences towards balanced diets, Domino's has launched light products, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has 2,171, while a small has under 1,000 calories.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to occupy the top job long-term.

She said: “We have a multiple active development and efficiency programs that we will be dedicated to executing at speed.”

Frampton noted these comprised further work on the organization's procurement system and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also lacking a full-time finance director until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Richard Snow serves as interim finance chief.
