Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to a challenging university quiz than the latest popular music record from a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided across four distinct movements and voiced in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the perspective of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars heavenward here, supported by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of other artists look rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and sole praise belonging to the artist. While this is not the first time album to fuse the past with modern styles, the scale feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. When she is tearing your heart apart, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything falls away, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener never exactly know—or even want to know—what you is going next."

Almost each song ends in a totally different place from where it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on Lux is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That trick is echoed by a different powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While some major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
