Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Context
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, including transport usage to discussions habits.
