RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
