NSW authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and served two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Event: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"There was potential for people to be injured and killed," stated a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.

Law enforcement said they did not immediately pursue the riders out of safety concerns but rather found the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

On Saturday, authorities stated they had served the US social media influencer known as Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of $562 and three demerit points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4m subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on the social media app.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure spoke with a local publication this week following the event gained traction on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest gatherings I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We must make sure we prevent these things entering the country [and] officers are granted the powers to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."

NSW recorded over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of 2025, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
